The Recce Tour: Who should joinand when?

"Every polished tour we run began as something rougher and braver. We call it a recce. It is the trip where we ride a region or country for the very first time, before it ever appears in our brochure. We find out whether it is good enough for you. It is the most adventurous rung on the ladder of Brompton overseas touring, and it is not for everyone. This is who it is for, and when to say yes."

The same rigour, a little less certainty

Let us be clear about one thing first. A recce is not a cheap holiday where we wing it. Every recce receives the same deep preplanning and detailed research as our flagship trips. We exhaust every avenue of secondary research, and we fold in ideas from our marshals and past participants. Our team usually flies in three days ahead of the group to check the parts that matter most.

Those early days are spent riding the trickiest sections ourselves, confirming that a road exists and is safe, timing the distances, and hunting out the places worth stopping for. By the time the group lands, the skeleton of the route has been tested, even if its final shape will still flex around the weather and the terrain we meet.

The difference is honest and simple. We have never ridden this route before. There may be no established cycle trails where we are heading, so we could meet a stretch of impassable elevation or an obstacle that turns us back. We will plan for that. We just cannot promise it will not happen, and that uncertainty is the whole character of the trip.

How a Recce differs from our Luxury Cycling Tours

Our standard Overseas Brompton cycling Tours are built around comfort. A Recce trims that back on purpose, to stay nimble. A Support Vehicle is present but more modest than the one on a full tour, and in heavy rain it can carry around 80 per cent of the group. On a Recce, you are expected to ride through moderate, light rain rather than waiting it out.

The meals are more modest too, though no less interesting. Instead of a booked omakase, you eat what the local culture actually eats, and you can always add a finer meal yourself later. You travel light and rely on an evening laundry to stay mobile, which keeps the logistics manageable. And the days are longer. A recce averages around 60km a day, against the 40km of our regular Brompton small group Cycling tours.

You look after yourself, a little more

On our Brompton Overseas Cycling Tours, we set up your bike, clean it, and hand it back ready to ride. A Recce asks more of you. As a Marshal, you manage your own bike. Our founder, Eugene is on hand for mechanical support, but with a smaller team he may not have the manpower to prepare and clean every bike the way we do on a full tour.

There is a cultural side to this self-reliance as well. On the ground, Maki helps us with the local interface and acts as our cultural bridge on ourJapan Tours . We ride as guests, and we respect the law of the land and local customs at all times. That means no drinking and riding, careful management of our rubbish, and keeping our noise down. Good manners are part of the kit you pack.

Who should join, and when

A Recce is suitable for a confident, self-managing rider. If you have already enjoyed one of our standard tours, you are comfortable with distance, and you are happy to trade a little polish for a lot of adventure, this is your invitation.

If you are newer to touring, start with one of our supported small group tours first, then graduate to a Recce when you are ready. There is no rush, and no wrong order.

The honest question to ask yourself is this.

"Do you want the finished, cosseted experience, or do you want to be part of writing it? "

A Recce rider is the second kind of person. A Recce is a partnership as much as a holiday, and the riders who thrive on it are the ones who see that as the appeal rather than a compromise.

How the Uncertainty rewards You

Because you carry a little of the unknown with us, we make sure you are rewarded for it in two ways.

The first is a lower participation fee than the finished tour that follows.

The second, and the one our Marshals care about most, is the riding itself.

You cover more ground, you see places before anyone else does, and you get the thrill of the unmapped road. Your feedback then helps shape the very tour that thousands may one day enjoy.
