Okinawa: Japan's Island Wonder
Updated: Aug 21
"Imagine a corner of Japan that feels more like the tropics. Warm water the colour of glass, a slow island pace, and long sea bridges you can ride across on a bicycle. This is Okinawa, and it was one of the very first places we brought our Bromptons. Years on, it is still one of the finest introductions to Brompton cycling overseas that we know."

The Truth about "relatively flat"
When we first ran this tour, guests kept asking the same nervous question.
Is the route flat? We always answered, honestly, relatively flat. And it mostly is.
But we will let you in on a running joke from our early tours. Okinawa also hides some of the steepest short climbs and descents in Japan, and our riders quickly learned never to trust Eugene, one of our Tour Guides, when he says relatively flat.
We say this not to worry you but to reassure you, because here is the important part. You never have to ride a climb you do not want to. More on how that works in a moment.
Arriving in Naha
The tour begins in Naha, the island's capital and home to its international airport. Direct flights from Singapore are limited, so a little planning pays off, and at the time of writing Scoot flies the route. A small warning to raise a smile: the arrival terminal has been under construction since 2023 and, as far as we can tell, still is. We gently tease our local partners about it every time we visit. Very un-Japanese.
City cycling in Naha is easy and pleasant, right up until you decide to visit the castle ruins. Castles, of course, were built on hilltops for defence, so the climb is part of the history. Think of it as a gentle warm-up for the journey ahead.
The Amazing Sea Bridges
The real highlight of cycling in Okinawa is the chance to ride across its long sea bridges, many of which have their own cycle path. It is a genuinely surreal feeling. You glide out over the ocean with crystal-clear water on either side, so clear that you can almost watch the fish swimming beneath you. These amazing sea bridges connect the main island to smaller satellite islands, and over the years we have fine-tuned the route to feature the most pristine cycle paths across the main island and the islands of Sesoko, Kouri and Miyagi.
How we keep it Beginner-friendly
Most days are manageable rides of around 40km, which is well within reach of a first-time tourer. Where there is a climb, we offer it as a choice. Strong riders who want the effort can take it on. Everyone else folds up their Brompton, hops into the support vehicle, and rejoins the ride at the top, ready to enjoy the descent. Nobody is ever left grinding up a hill they did not sign up for, and nobody is ever left behind.
We are honest about the bikes, too. We do not promise a Brompton that never has an issue. But because every rider is on the same bike, we carry a single set of spare parts that fits everyone in the group, and we know these bikes inside out. A small problem is sorted in minutes and never spoils your day on the water's edge.
A Blue Zone Lifestyle you can taste
Okinawa is one of the world's rare Blue Zones, the places where people live remarkably long, healthy lives. When we ride up to Ogimi village at the northern tip of the island, we get to taste the Okinawan diet for ourselves. One meal there and the Blue Zone lifestyle stops being a headline and starts making perfect sense.

There are smaller pleasures too. We visit the island's modern and traditional salt factories, a surprising and lovely stop, and riders are rewarded with the local speciality, salt-based ice cream. It is better than it sounds, and it sounds pretty good.

Tropical one minute, Alpine the next
What makes Okinawa so special is how quickly it changes. One stretch of road carries a bright, almost Hawaiian vibe, all tropical plants and turquoise sea. Turn a corner and you are riding through the cool alpine forest that mainland Japan is famous for. Few islands pack this much variety into a single day, and on a Brompton you feel every shift in the air.
Above all, Okinawa moves at its own gentle speed. This is the chilled, unhurried side of Japan, a world away from the rush of Tokyo. It suits the way we tour perfectly, unhurried, premium, and built around the place rather than the clock.
What comes next
As cyclists, we never tire of watching the fishermen and divers who work these waters. It has given us an idea. In the future, we plan to weave fishing and diving into our Okinawa Tour. So you can do more than admire the sea from the bridge. You can get into it.
For now, Okinawa remains one of the most rewarding places to ride a Brompton, and one of the kindest to a first-timer. Come for the sea bridges, stay for the long, happy island life. We will handle the climbs.
