Bhutan on a Brompton: Perhaps the Great Adventure You Are Looking For

Most people think of Bhutan as a place you walk through. Monasteries, mountain passes, prayer flags, the long climb to Tiger's Nest. Very few people think of it as a place you ride.

We did. In September 2025 we took a small group of guests to Bhutan on Bromptons, and as far as we know, we remain the first and only operator to run a Brompton cycling tour in the kingdom.

It is now the most complete tour in our range.

Bhutan is more rideable than you think

The assumption is that Bhutan is all switchbacks and thin air. That is true of some roads. It is not true of the roads we chose.

Eugene spent the recce doing what we always do, which is the trial and error so our guests do not have to. When you select the right roads, Bhutan turns out to be a genuinely cyclable country on a Brompton. The tarmac between Paro, Thimphu and Punakha is well maintained. Better still, the driving culture is unhurried. Bhutanese drivers give you room, they are patient, and nobody is in a rush. After riding in busier countries, the calm takes a day to get used to.

This is the advantage of Brompton overseas touring with us. The bikes fold. When a stretch of road is long, dull or simply not worth your legs, we fold up, load into the support vehicle, and reopen the bikes where the scenery earns your effort. You spend your riding hours on the best of Bhutan and none of it on the rest.

The bike, and what it should be wearing

The Brompton G Line is the natural choice for Bhutan. Its wider tyres and longer wheelbase suit mountain roads well.

That said, you do not need one. Standard Bromptons fitted with Schwalbe Marathon Racer tyres handled the routes comfortably. We ride only original Bromptons with original Brompton parts across the whole group, and that uniformity is deliberate. One spare inner tube fits every rider, so the support vehicle always carries the correct part. We are not claiming a bike never has a problem. We are saying we know these bikes inside out and carry exactly what they need, so a small problem never eats into your holiday.

The fold turns heads

There is a moment on every Bhutan riding day that we have stopped trying to predict. Someone folds their bike outside a shop, a temple or a café, and a small crowd forms.

Bhutanese locals had never seen anything like it. Children come closer. Shopkeepers step outside. Conversations start that would never have started otherwise, and you end up meeting the owner rather than the cashier. It is a small mechanical trick that opens doors across a language barrier, and it happens all day long.

More than a cycling holiday

This is where Bhutan pulls ahead of every other destination we run.

Across Paro, Thimphu and Punakha, the riding sits inside a much larger programme. You hike to Tiger's Nest, the monastery clinging to the cliff face at 3,120 metres.

You go white water rafting on the Mo Chhu. You try archery, the national sport, alongside people who have been doing it since childhood. You spend time in dzongs and villages with a guide who explains what you are looking at, not just what it is called.

No other tour in our range brings together cycling, hiking, water and culture in one week. If you have been waiting for a trip that is active without being punishing, this is the one.

Built for riders who are not racing anyone

Our guests are not hardcore cyclists. Most ride around 40km a day and prefer good company and a good meal at the end of it. Eugene has trained guests who could not manage 5km at the start and who now finish week-long tours.

Bhutan is run as one of our Brompton small group tours, fully supported by passenger and equipment vehicles, with bags, permits, guides and reservations handled. You pedal and enjoy.
