Peng Hu, Taiwan: A Jeju Alternative

Jeju's Drama, without the crowds

Peng Hu and Jeju are cousins. Both were shaped by fire, and both wear it proudly. Peng Hu is ringed with dramatic volcanic and limestone rock formations, the columnar basalt cliffs and sculpted sea stacks that draw comparisons with Jeju's famous coast. The difference is that Peng Hu remains beautifully uncrowded. You get the same volcanic wonder and the same big ocean skies, with the roads largely to yourself.

Our Tour spends three days on the islands, and they are built around Peng Hu's greatest gift, its scenery. This is a coastline that asks you to stop, look, and take the photograph. Getting there is wonderfully simple

Reaching Peng Hu is part of its charm. From Taipei, you take a short domestic flight from Songshan airport across to the islands. Because it is a domestic hop, there is no second round of immigration to queue through and no fuss. You are checked in, in the air, and landing among the islands almost before you have settled in your seat. For a shorter getaway, that ease matters a great deal.

An island made for a Brompton

Peng Hu could have been designed for Brompton Taiwan cycling. Compared with Taiwan's busiest main island, the roads here are wide and the traffic is light, which makes for relaxed, open riding. On a folding bike, you can drift along the coast, fold up to hop between viewpoints, and cover the best of an island in a day without ever feeling rushed or hemmed in by cars.

We will always tell you the truth about a route, and Peng Hu earns its rewards. There are some climbs and a little elevation to tackle. They are worth every turn of the pedals, because the views that open up at the top, all lime stone and blue water, are genuinely spectacular. Where a climb is more than you fancy on the day, you simply fold up your Brompton, ride ahead in the support vehicle, and rejoin for the descent. Nobody is left behind.

Then there is the wind. When Peng Hu is calm, it is a joy, and when it decides to blow, it really blows. That is the nature of an island in the middle of the strait. It is also why timing matters, and why we plan our riding around the conditions rather than against them. When to go and why

The best months to ride Peng Hu are March, April, December and January, when the islands are at their most welcoming. These are the windows we love most, and they book up among our regulars, precisely because Peng Hu has become a favourite destination. If you want the volcanic beauty of Jeju in a fraction of the travel time, this is the season to plan for.

Because the whole trip runs to just three days on the islands, Peng Hu slots neatly into a long weekend or the tail end of a trip to Taiwan. You do not need to clear a fortnight from the calendar or brace for jet lag. You land, you ride, you eat well, and you come home refreshed rather than wrung out.
