Beyond the famous shrines and guided bus tours, Kyoto holds a quieter side that rewards those who take the slow road. This is the Kyoto the guidebooks don't quite capture.
Kyoto is so much more than its temples. On this 7-day Brompton tour, we take you through three very different sides of this ancient region, places most visitors never get to see.
We start in the rolling green hills of Tea of Kyoto, where Wazuka's quiet tea fields stretch as far as the eye can see. Then we weave through the ancient cedar forests of Forest of Kyoto, on roads that feel wonderfully remote and unhurried. We finish at the Sea of Kyoto, pedalling along the stunning Miyazu Bay coastline. It's a route that feels as local as it gets.
Every evening, we gather over kaiseki dinners and other local restaurants, the kind of warm, intimate meals you only find when you venture off the tourist trail.
This is slow travel at its finest. No crowds, no commercialised hotspots. Just 250km of beautiful roads, great company, and a Japan that very few people get to experience.
We have mapped out flat river paths and paved streets that are perfect for the Brompton bicycle; however, it is helpful to practice slow-speed handling in Singapore to prepare for the narrow lanes on this journey.
With friendly leaders, hotel stays, and full support throughout, all you need to do is unfold your Brompton and enjoy the ride.

"Cycling through Denmark and Sweden on a scouting run was pure discovery, chasing down Lund's best bars and toasting to a vineyard afternoon in Arilds, with every turn revealing another spot worth a return trip."
