Sun Moon Lake: The 30km Loop Everyone Remembers

"Some rides you finish and forget. Sun Moon Lake is not one of them. This is the loop that stays with people for years, a roughly 30km ring around the most beautiful stretch of water in Taiwan. Someone once named it among the ten most beautiful bike trails in the world, and it is easy to see why. We think the best way to ride it is slowly, and here is the story behind that."

The loop with a very famous name
Sun Moon Lake has earned some serious cycling credentials. It now hosts L'Etape by Tour de France, the official amateur event of the Tour, and it is the first stop the series has ever made in Asia. The inaugural edition in 2024 was won by four-time Tour de France champion Chris Froome, with sprint legend Mark Cavendish riding as a guest. Thousands of riders from around the world now race here every year.
It is a wonderful thing for the lake, and it tells you everything about the quality of the route. But if we are honest, a race is not why we come. We come for the exact opposite reason.
Why we ride it slowly
Picture the race for a moment. Thousands of riders, numbers pinned on, heads down, chasing a clock around the water. It is thrilling, and it is not remotely what a holiday should feel like. Now picture our version. A small, unhurried group of friends on folding bikes, stopping wherever the view demands it, with all the time in the world. Same lake, completely different day.
That contrast is the whole point of a Brompton Sun Moon Lake tour with us. The riders are trying to make the loop shorter. We are trying to make it last. When the reward is scenery this good, hurrying past it makes very little sense.
There is far more here than the water, too. The lake sits high in the misty hills of Nantou, the largest body of fresh water in Taiwan, and it takes its name from its shape, round like the sun on one side and curved like a crescent moon on the other. Around its shores you will find hillside temples, the culture of the indigenous Thao people, and some of the island's most celebrated tea. We build in time for all of it, because it is the whole reason to come.
The route itself
The loop is around 30km of well-kept, paved riding, and it mixes dedicated lakeside bike path with short sections of quiet road. The most magical part is the western shore, where the Yuetan and Xiangshan bikeways carry you right out over the water on wooden boardwalks and gentle bridges. You will pass the striking Xiangshan Visitor Center, the hillside Wenwu Temple, and viewpoint after viewpoint where the hills fall straight into the lake. For a Sun Moon Lake bike tour, this western stretch alone is worth the trip.
The best light, and the best stops
If you want the lake at its most spellbinding, the early morning is the moment to be out. The water lies dead still, a soft mist hangs over the hills, and the light is pure gold. It is the kind of morning that makes even reluctant photographers stop every few minutes. We plan our riding around these golden hours rather than against them, so you catch the lake at its most beautiful, not its most crowded. Bring a camera you trust. You will use it more than you expect.
The folding-bike advantage
Here is where the Brompton quietly changes the day. Not every metre of the loop is equally lovely. A few stretches run alongside busier road, and they add distance without adding much beauty. On a folding bike, we simply do not bother with them. We fold up, shuttle past the dull bits, and unfold again where the riding is glorious. You spend your energy on the finest parts of the loop and skip the rest entirely. It is the smartest way to enjoy the best cycling routes Taiwan has to offer, and it is something a road racer, locked into the full course, can never do.
For every kind of rider
Best of all, this is a ride almost anyone can enjoy. The paved surface is kind, the gradients are gentle, and the distance is manageable at an easy pace. Ridden slowly with plenty of stops, the full loop unfolds over a relaxed few hours, which leaves the rest of the day for a long lunch and a proper look around. If you tire, or simply prefer to watch the water for a while, the support vehicle is always close by. A Sun Moon Lake cycling day is one of the gentlest and most rewarding on any Taiwan cycling Tour , which is exactly why we love to share it with first-time travellers.
Come and ride the loop that everyone remembers. Not against the clock, but at the pace the lake deserves. We promise you will still be talking about it long after you are home.
