The Tempura Run: A Scratch with a Story

Not all scratches are created equal. Some are born from sheer bad luck, while others come with a story worth telling over coffee.

Back in early 2014, long before we started leading guided overseas cycling tours at Brompton Experiences, our founder, Eugene took his brand-new Black and White Brompton on a trip to Fukuoka, Japan. At the time, overseas touring wasn't about high-mileage training. It was about leisurely cruising from one incredible food stop to the next.

Hungry for lunch, Eugene and his riding buddy pulled up to a popular tempura spot inside a shopping mall. Not realizing that Japanese cities feature extensive underground bike parking facilities, they folded their Bromptons and left them parked neat and tidy right outside the entrance.

An hour later, full of tempura, they stepped outside, and their bikes were gone.

After a brief wave of panic thinking the bikes were stolen, they discovered the truth. Local parking wardens had moved the bikes, tossing them onto the sidewalk curb along with other illegally parked bicycles. Eugene picked up his Brompton to find a long, deep scrape running straight down the main stem. It wasn’t pretty, but to this day, that scratch is a souvenir from a unforgettable feast in Fukuoka.

The 70/30 rule: Preventing Common Frame Scratches

1. Water Bottle Cages with Metal Catches: Aftermarket bottle mounts with raw metal clamps or exposed bolt heads frequently rub against the main frame tube during tight turns or when mounting.

2. The Unfolded Pedal Scrap: Unfolding the frame before unfolding your pedal (or forgetting the correct fold order) causes the pedal spindle to bite directly into the rear frame paint.

The remaining 30% of scratches? That is almost always down to the classic mystery bump, a crowded train car, a café table nudge, or someone accidentally toppling your folded bike over in a hallway.

Restoring the Finish: Co-Developing Custom Touch-Up Paint

Because our own rental fleet at Brompton Experiences works hard on the road, our bikes collect their fair share of battle scars. To solve this, we partnered directly with the expert colorists at Spraysmiths to custom-formulate a specialized line of Brompton Touch Up Paint.

Matching bike paint is far trickier than it looks. Wet paint in a vial dries to a noticeably different shade once cured on raw steel. We tested every single batch against actual Brompton frames under natural daylight and workshop lights to ensure the closest possible match.

• Matte Colors: Shades like Matt Black, Tempest Blue, or Fire Red achieve near-seamless blending with a careful application.

• Lacquers and Sparkle Finishes: The Raw Lacquer, Flame Lacquer, and high-glitz metallic coats present the biggest challenge. P Line owners, we are looking at you—those deep, layered coats react uniquely to light reflection, making spot touch-ups slightly more visible up close.

Touch-Up Dab vs. Full Airbrushing

It is important to manage expectations when tackling folding bike maintenance. A quick dab of touch-up paint is designed to seal bare metal, prevent corrosion, and obscure small nicks from a distance.

However, returning a heavily scratched stem or main frame back to factory perfection requires professional airbrushing, leveling, and full clear-coat polishing. It is detailed, labor-intensive work.
