Are Only Brompton Bikes Allowed on Tour?

"It is one of the first questions people ask us, and it is a fair one. Our name is Brompton Experiences, so surely you must ride a Brompton to come along? The honest answer is more welcoming than you might expect. At heart we are travel specialists, and everything we do is about enabling you to enjoy your overseas tours. The bike is the tool, not the toll."

At our club rides, bring whatever you like
Let us start close to home. For our free weekly club rides here in Singapore, there is no reason at all why you cannot simply turn up and join us on any bicycle you own. Locally we are happily bike-agnostic. All we care about is that you enjoy cycling and want to push your own limits a little further each week.
The one thing to know is that the routes we choose are picked with the trifold folding bike in mind, and some include narrow pathways and tight spots. A bigger bike will still have a lovely time, but you will quickly see why the small, nimble folders feel so at home on our roads.

On tour, it is about the fold, not the badge
Overseas is where things become a little more particular, and there is a good reason for it that has nothing to do with brand loyalty. One of our core touring philosophies is simple: if a stretch of road is not worth riding, we skip it, and we save your energy for the truly pristine routes. To do that, we need bikes that pack down into a small form factor so they can be loaded quickly into our support vehicles.
This is where a compact folding bike is worth its weight in gold. You would be surprised to learn that we can fit as many as twelve Bromptons into the back of a single van, and still have room for everyone's luggage. That is the magic of the Brompton compact fold, and it is what lets us move a whole group nimbly from one beautiful place to the next.
The fold pays off again and again once you are there. A compact trifold slips onto a train or a ferry, tucks into the corner of a small cafe, and lifts over a flight of steps without any fuss. On a tour that hops between islands, cities and quiet country lanes, that flexibility is not a luxury. It is the very thing that makes the whole itinerary possible.
So, other trifolds are welcome too
Here is the reassuring part. If you do not own a Brompton but you do have another trifold folding bike, you are certainly welcome to bring it on tour. The trifold design was actually defined by Brompton, so naturally we believe the Brompton is the best in its class, but we happily recognise that several other brands now make bikes that are just as compact and portable.
The test is a practical one, not a brand one. A Brompton excels at city cycling, slipping around tight corners, down small alleys, and onto public transport with ease. So long as your bike can do the same, and fold down small enough to travel and load into the van, it is welcome to join the adventure.
The one small catch: Spares
There is a single honest trade-off to be aware of. Our mechanic carries a kit of parts and spares chosen specifically for the Brompton. Because so many of our riders are on the same bike, one spare part can be shared among ten riders, which is wonderfully efficient.

If you ride something else, that safety net does not quite fit your bike, so the only real inconvenience is that you would need to pack a few spares that are unique to your machine. Bring those, and you are all set.
If you are curious about what actually tends to go wrong on the road, we have written about the parts that usually fail and how we handle them.
Curious to try a Brompton?
If reading this has you wondering how your trifold compares to the real thing, we would love to show you. We keep a fleet of authentic Brompton bikes available for rental, and you are welcome to take one on tour to feel the difference for yourself. Many riders try one this way and never look back.
The thing that matters most
Whatever you ride, the single most valuable step is to join our weekly club rides first. That is where you learn how we ride together as a group in Singapore, holding a tidy formation, watching out for one another, reading the road as a team. We ride exactly the same way overseas, so a few Saturdays at home make your first Brompton tour feel familiar from the very first kilometre.

So, are only Bromptons allowed on tour? Locally, ride whatever you love. Overseas, we lean towards the trifold form factor, and for that our honest view is that the Brompton is simply the best there is. Come and see for yourself, on whatever bike you already call your own.
