Cycling through the vibrant streets and serene park connectors of Singapore on a Brompton is an experience unlike any other. The Brompton Experiences Cycling Club (BECC) is dedicated to fostering a vibrant cycling community centred around the joy of riding these iconic folding bicycles.

However, a great group ride doesn't happen by accident. It requires structure, planning, and dedicated individuals who prioritize the safety and enjoyment of others. These individuals are our Marshals, the absolute backbone of our community.

To ensure a consistent and positive experience for all participants in BECC, we are proud to introduce our refined Marshal Development Programme. This initiative not only provides vital structure for our rides but also offers incredible opportunities for personal development, skills upgrading, and exclusive club benefits.

The Anatomy of a Great Ride Marshal: Key Skills

Being a Marshal is about much more than simply riding at the front of the pack. It requires a specific set of skills and a deep commitment to the community. According to our guidelines, Marshals must always prioritise the safety of participants and adhere to all local traffic laws. Professionalism, clear communication, and an unwavering commitment to inclusivity are essential traits.

Our marshals operate in three primary roles, each demanding unique capabilities:

  1. Lead Volunteer (Ride Captain): The Ride Captain is the driving force of the group. Key skills include route planning, setting an appropriate pace, and conducting comprehensive pre-ride briefings that cover safety protocols and expected conduct.

They must act as the main point of contact during emergencies and monitor the well-being of all participants, particularly those who may be struggling.

  2. Sweeper Volunteer: Positioned at the back, the Sweeper ensures no participant is left behind. This role requires immense patience and empathy, as they assist slower riders and provide the encouragement needed to keep them moving. Furthermore, they must possess basic mechanical skills to provide on-the-go assistance to riders experiencing issues, ensuring the group remains intact.

  3. Support Volunteer: Operating dynamically within the group, they help manage intersections and traffic to ensure safe crossings. They also engage with new members to make them feel welcome and assist with navigation and group communication.

Beyond these specific roles, all Marshals are expected to possess strong communication skills, maintain a positive attitude, and uphold a zero-tolerance policy regarding discrimination and substance use. Furthermore, a foundational knowledge of first aid preparedness, emergency protocols, and group riding etiquette is strictly required to handle any unforeseen incidents on the road.

Levelling Up: Skills Upgrading and Training

We understand that nobody is born an expert Marshal. That is why our programme is deeply focused on skills upgrading and structured development. The Marshal Development Programme features a clear, multi-tiered progression path, starting from a Training Marshal, advancing to a Core Marshal, and potentially reaching a Committee Member position.

As a Training Marshal, intermediate cyclists learn by observing Core Marshals, assisting with Telegram updates, and providing post-ride feedback. This tier is designed to help you build confidence without overwhelming responsibility.

For those looking to push their personal development, the club offers an exciting array of Course Training and Skills Badges. Marshals can work towards specialized certifications such as the Elite Cardio GP1 Pacer, Path Finder, Touring Mechanic, First Aid, Phone Mount and Map Out, and Training for Beginners Sweeper.

Whether you want to master on-the-go touring repairs, improve your navigational prowess, or simply learn how to better support a struggling beginner, there is a training pathway designed specifically for you. These skills not only make you a better cyclist but enhance your leadership and crisis management capabilities in everyday life.

Reaping the Rewards: Facilities, Workshops, and Perks

The BECC believes in heavily rewarding the time, effort, and skills that our volunteers bring to each ride. By stepping up as a Marshal, you gain unprecedented access to club resources that are guaranteed to elevate your cycling experience.

Core Marshals and Committee Members enjoy full access to the Brompton Experiences workshop and fleet resources, allowing you to tinker, learn, and perfect your bicycle maintenance in a professional setting.

The financial and lifestyle benefits are equally rewarding. All active marshals, from Training to Committee levels, earn a $100 services credit for every 10 rides completed within a 6-month period. Furthermore, marshals receive progressive discounts on overseas tours, ranging from 5% for Training Marshals up to 15% for Committee Members.

Beyond the financial perks, marshals receive exclusive BECC branded gear, priority registration for popular events, and invitations to monthly F&B gatherings to celebrate their hard work and foster camaraderie.
