How Much Training Do You Actually Need Before Your First Tour?

"It is the question we hear more than any other, usually said quietly, almost apologetically. Am I fit enough to do this? If that worry has ever stopped you booking a cycling holiday, this article is for you. The honest answer is that you need far less training than you fear, and we will show you exactly how to get there."

The honest answer: less than you think

You do not need to be an athlete to enjoy an overseas cycling tour. You do not even need to be a cyclist yet. Our tours are built around ordinary people travelling for pleasure, not racers chasing a time. Most days come in around 40km, and here is the part that changes everything: a touring day is nothing like a single hard 40km effort at home.

On tour, that distance is broken into gentle segments, spaced out with photo stops, coffee breaks and a long, unhurried lunch. And the support vehicle is always there, so if a stretch is more than you fancy, you fold up your Brompton and ride ahead in comfort. Good cycling tour fitness preparation is really about arriving relaxed and confident, not about being able to race anyone.

It helps to know who our riders actually are. Many are in their fifties, sixties and beyond, travelling for the joy of it. This is not about youth or athletic prowess. It is about steady, patient preparation, and that is well within the reach of almost anyone who wants it.

A realistic plan, starting from little or nothing

If you are beginning from almost no cycling, give yourself roughly eight to twelve weeks. That is plenty. The goal is simple: teach your body that time in the saddle is normal and pleasant. Here is a gentle, sensible way to build up, and as with any new exercise, listen to your body and check with your doctor if you have any concerns.

  • Weeks 1 to 2. Short, easy rides of 5 to 10km, two or three times a week. No speed, no pressure. You are simply getting comfortable on the bike.

  • Weeks 3 to 5. Stretch your longest ride to 15 or 20km, and add our weekly club ride to your routine. Riding with others makes the distance melt away.

  • Weeks 6 to 8. Build to a comfortable 25 to 35km. By now the bike feels like an old friend rather than a challenge.

  • Weeks 9 to 12. Complete one or two rides of around 40km. Once you have done that at home, even with a rest in the middle, a supported touring day will feel very achievable.

If you can ride 30 to 40km at an easy pace with a break or two, you are ready for most of our beginner tours. These are the only beginner cyclist fitness tips that really matter: ride regularly, build slowly, and let the distance come to you.

Eugene Tour Guide guiding a beginner brompton rider in a confidence ride session

Start with a confidence ride

The best first step of all is not a gym membership. It is a Brompton Experiences confidence ride. This is a one-hour session where Eugene teaches you bike handling from the very beginning, helps you gently find your limits, and works out whether you are ready to join our Saturday group rides. There is no judgement and no pressure, just a calm, expert start.

From there, our free weekly club rides do the rest. They are where fitness is built almost without you noticing, in good company, with people who were once exactly where you are now. Training for a cycling holiday should feel like a series of pleasant Saturdays, not a punishing regime, and with us, it does.

From 5km to 50km: it really happens

If you think this sounds too optimistic, we have watched it happen many times. We have guided riders who first came to us unable to manage even 5km, wobbling and unsure, convinced that touring was for other people. With a confidence ride, a few months of club rides, and a great deal of encouragement, those same riders have gone on to complete seven-day overseas tours at 50km a day. Not because they became elite cyclists, but because they built up steadily and believed the process.

That is the quiet magic of it. You are never trying to meet anyone else's standard. You are simply, week by week, exceeding your own.

The only thing you truly need

So how much training do you actually need? Enough to arrive with a smile rather than a knot in your stomach. A few months of gentle, regular riding, a confidence ride to start you off, and a willingness to let us do the worrying. Everything else, the planning, the pace, the safety net of the support vehicle, is our job, not yours.

A cycling holiday for beginners is not a contradiction. It is one of the most rewarding first adventures there is. Start small, start now, and let us help you go further than you ever thought you could.
